Next year BMW will launch the hotter version of the 2-Series, the M2. BMW’s Friedrich Nitschke recently revealed some of the details to Autocar about the M2, with the biggest update being that it will be powered by a 3.0L inline-six cylinder engine.
The M2’s engine won’t be the same engine that powers the M3 and M4 models, but instead is an all-new engine that is based on the B57 engine that will power the next 7-Series. The engine, codenamed S57 B30 has the potential to generate up to 400 horsepower, which Nitschke believes is the “magic number.” Even though it has the potential to generate around 400 horsepower, BMW has to make sure it’s not too close to the M4’s 425-hp, so it may end up with around 375-hp.

The M2 will be offered with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional dual-clutch seven-speed transmission. The M2 will reportedly reach 62 mph in 4.4 seconds with the dual-clutch transmission, while its top speed will be electronically-limited to 155 mph.

The M2 is expected to arrive at the end of 2015 with a convertible version arriving in 2016.
