BMW is going to release a production version of the front-wheel-drive Active Tourer concept in early 2015. The Active Tourer will share its platform with the new Mini Cooper, including the Cooper’s new three and four-cylinder engines when it arrives in the U.S.
Ian Robertson, BMW AG’s board member for sales and marketing, told Automotive News that the Active Tourer will be the first of several new fwd BMWs. BMW hopes to bring in a new crop of buyers with the new front-wheel-drive models. A long wheelbase version of the Active Tourer will also be offered with a third row of seats and AWD will also be an option.

“With the Active Tourer, we will get a lot of new customers again. They will come out of the premium segment and from some of the volume players,” stated Robertson.
