Toyota recently announced that the FJ Cruiser SUV will disappear after the 2014 model year and now Nissan is currently trying to decide if the Xterra will suffer the same fate. The Nissan Xterra SUV is part of a dying breed of body-on-frame SUVs that have an uncertain future thanks to the popularity of more modern crossovers.
Nissan recently told Edmunds that a decision will be made within the next year if it will replace the aging Xterra. Pierre Loing, vice president of product planning for Nissan Americas told Edmunds that poor sales, fuel economy concerns and a lack of partners is threatening the Xterra’s future.
The Xterra originally debuted in 1999 and the current model has been around since 2005. In 2000 Nissan sold 88,578 Xterras, but last year that number dropped to 17,200 units.
