With the introduction of the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible, Ford Racing is putting a new open-air performance car in the Mustang stable. At 795 hp from its supercharged V8, it is the most potent Mustang convertible to come out of Ford’s hands.
The new model will be the drop-top equivalent of the Dark Horse SC coupe, though with a different philosophy. Where the coupe is built for the track, Ford has made this one a grand touring machine for the street. It should be in showrooms by spring 2027.
There is no mistaking the figures: the Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible puts out 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque thanks to a supercharged 5.2-liter V8. That power is channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
In some ways it is a return to form; according to Ford, it is the first new high-performance Mustang convertible since 2013 and now stands as the flagship open-air offering in the family.
“If the coupe is the race-bred side of our DNA, this convertible is the pure street cred part of the formula,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director at Ford Racing. “It’s just pure fun, fast, freedom.”
While it is underpinned by the same rigid chassis as the Dark Horse SC coupe, the engineers have put their own spin on it. Arie Groeneveld, chief engineer for the Mustang Dark Horse SC, notes that while both were developed in-house, they did not set out to make the convertible a lap-time setter. “We’ve engineered it to be the ultimate top-down grand touring machine,” he says.
To that end, the next-generation MagneRide suspension has been recalibrated for the road. The result is a ride that is more comfortable and smooth yet still feels planted when you put your foot down. With the roof down at the touch of a button there is nothing to muffle the full soundtrack of the engine and blower.
The styling is in keeping with its street credentials. The Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible is available in Precision Purple Metallic with a distinct caliper color and a cabin accented in Black Onyx and Space Gray.
Pricing has not been announced, but Ford expects to take orders for the 2027 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible in the fall of 2026 before the first examples reach dealers in the spring.
