We’ve loved the Volkswagen Golf GTI for years, but for buyers that rather have a sedan than a hatchback, VW offers the Jetta GLI. The 2023 Jetta GLI is essentially a sedan version of the GTI and rivals the Honda Civic Si and to some extent the Hyundai Elantra N.

2023 VW Jetta GLI Review

While the Jetta GLI is closely related to the GTI, there’s one distinction. The Jetta GLI is based on the last version of the MQB platform, while the GTI is now based on an updated version of the same platform. While there have been some improvements to the new platform, the good news is that the Jetta GLI can still hold its own with its older roots.

The Jetta GLI is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This is a big improvement over the regular Jetta with its 158 hp 1.5-liter turbo. It’s worth noting that the GTI has a modified version of this engine that generates 241 horsepower. The four-cylinder can be mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Compared to its main rival, the Honda Civic Si, the Jetta GLI’s extra power on tap is definitely noticeable. The Civic Si only has 200 horsepower and 192 lb-ft., so its no surprise that the Jetta GLI has a bit more punch around town. The Elantra N is also a compact sedan, but its 276 hp sets it apart from both the Jetta GLI and Civic Si.

The Jetta GLI also gets some parts from the seventh generation GTI, like its front brakes. It also has a limited-slip differential, adaptive suspension and unique steering system to make it more exciting to drive than the standard Jetta. It would be great if summer tires were offered to provide a bit more grip, like the GTI.

2023 VW Jetta GLI Review

The Jetta GLI sends its power to the front wheels and around town the Jetta GLI has more than enough power to add some fun to your commute. Unlike the Civic Si, the Jetta GLI is available with an automatic transmission, which makes it more appealing to a wider audience. The automatic transmission shifts quick and smoothly as you pick up speed, but it can be a bit slow to downshift. The variable ratio electric power steering system provides more than enough assist around town, but we wish it offered more feedback when you’re carving up a back country road.

Even with the extra power under the hood, you don’t have to pay too much of a compromise with fuel efficiency, since the Jetta GLI is rated at 26 mpg city, 37 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined with the six-speed manual. The automatic version is almost just as efficient with its 26/36/30 mpg rating.

2023 VW Jetta GLI Review

Inside the Jetta GLI’s cabin gets some upgrades over the standard Jetta with sportier leather seats, a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster, ambient lighting and a large sunroof. Our only gripe with the interior is that the Jetta GLI’s interior needs higher quality materials. There’s far too much hard plastic covering the interior. On the tech front, there’s an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless charging and a Beats audio system.

The pricing for the 2023 Jetta GLI is only offered in one trim, Autobahn. It’s pricing starts at $32,680, including destination. The automatic version is priced at $33,480.

At the end of the day, the 2023 VW Jetta GLI is a near perfect compact sport sedan for buyers that want to have a bit more fun on their daily commute.
