Volkswagen has unveiled the 2028 ID. Tiguan EV, which is the replacement for the ID.4. It’s going on sale first in Europe, but it should go on sale in the U.S. sometime in 2027. The big news is the ID. Tiguan now has bolder styling than the ID.4 with a driving range over 300 miles.

There is no mistaking the ID. Tiguan for its softer, crossover-tinged predecessors. The ID. Tiguan has adopted a “Pure Positive” approach to styling, with a muscular build and exacting lines that give it a more authoritative look. Step inside and the quality is apparent; VW has made a point of using better materials and an intuitive cockpit to create an atmosphere that rivals luxury vehicles in the higher segment. The interior also finally gets some functionality improvements, like actual buttons and window switches for all four windows.

The ID. Tiguan is based on the MEB+ platform and VW says that using the more lenient WLTP figures it has a driving range as much as 372 miles. The EPA rating will likely be slightly over 300 miles. Volkswagen is making three powertrain options available in Europe. We will have to wait and see which versions come to the U.S.:

  • Entry level: 188 horsepower with rear-wheel drive and a 58 kWh battery.
  • Mid-spec: 282 horsepower, RWD and 77 kWh.
  • Performance: 295 horsepower 4MOTION all-wheel drive on a 77 kWh pack.

For those who need to put the vehicle to work, the 77 kWh variants can tow 4,409 pounds.

A Cockpit with Some Character

Volkswagen has taken customer input to heart when reworking the interior for ease of use. The 10-inch Digital Cockpit and 15-inch infotainment screen are joined by an optional 12-inch display for the co-driver. Much like the privacy screens on a laptop, it has a mode that lets the passenger get on with some gaming or media without pulling the driver’s attention.

Then there are the “Retro” displays for a bit of fun. Hit the “View” button and the infotainment will put on a show of heritage, whether that is the blue-red instrument look of a Golf IV or a virtual version of an old Beetle or Golf I.
