The 2022 Toyota Corolla sedan and hatchback have both earned the highest safety rating possible from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety – Top Safety Pick+.

To qualify for the highest rating, a vehicle must earn good ratings in all six IIHS tests including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

There is a distinction between two rating, with the lower Top Safety Pick rating only requiring available good or acceptable headlights, but to get the Top Safety Pick+ rating, good or acceptable headlights must be standard across all trims. Both of the Corolla’s available LED headlight systems earned an acceptable rating.

The Top Safety Pick+ rating only applies to Corolla models build after November 2021, when Toyota made improvements to the non-curve adaptive headlights.
