Compared to the current Ioniq hatchback, the Ioniq 5 features an angular design with lots of creases and sharp lines. The Ioniq 5 is based on Hyundai’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform. The platform features a flat battery floor, and steer-by-wire and drive-by-wire technologies. In terms of size, the Ioniq 5 slots in between the Tucson and Santa Fe, but its wheelbase is about 4 inches longer than the Palisade SUV.

The Ioniq 5 will be available in four versions, with either the Standard Range (58 kWh) or Long Range (77.4 kWh) battery capacity and rear- or all-wheel drive.

The Standard Range with two-wheel drive is powered by a 160-kilowatt motor that powers the rear wheels. It has 218 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque that gives it enough power to reach 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds. The Standard Range all-wheel drive version gets a second electric motor for the front axle that increases the output to 235 hp and 446 lb-ft. of torque.

Globally there are two different battery options for the Ioniq 5 Long Range, in the US it gets a 77.4-kWh battery, while other markets get a slightly smaller 72.6-kWh battery pack. In Europe the smaller pack with 2WD has about a 300 mile range on the European WLTP testing cycle. The EPA’s testing is more stringent, so it will have a slightly shorter driving range in the US.

The Ioniq 5 Long Range AWD gets a more powerful front motor than the Standard Range AWD model, which gives it a total 306 hp and 446 lb-ft. of torque. This is the quickest version with a 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds.

Hyundai also says that the Ioniq 5 can tow over 3,500 pounds.

When it’s time to recharge the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 5 can be charged at a DC Fast Charger at up to 350 kW, which means that it can be charged from 10% to 80% in only 18 minutes. If you only have 5 minutes to recharge, that will add 62 miles of range. The Ioniq 5 can be recharged on slower 240-volt and 110-volt outlets as well.

The Ioniq 5 also can be turned into a charger thanks to its new Vehicle-to-Load charging system. The V2L system means that you can plug other devices, like a computer or camping equipment into the Ioniq 5 to be recharged via the car’s battery. It has a total output of about 3.6 kW. The Ioniq 5 can also be equipped with a solar roof, that can add a small amount of energy back into the battery.
