Honda has announced that the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid has the longest electric driving range of any other midsize plug-in hybrid, with its 47 mile EPA rating. The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid also has an EPA fuel economy rating of 110 combined MPGe and a gasoline only 44/40 MPG rating.

Once the Clarity Plug-in passes 47 miles, the 1.5L Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder engine kicks on to give the PHEV a total driving range of 340 miles. The Clarity Plug-in is powered by a 181-horsepower electric motor with 232 lb.-ft. of torque. It takes 2.5 hours to recharge the 17-kilowatt hour (kWh) battery pack at 240 volts. The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid features four selectable modes – Normal, Econ, Sport and HV. HV mode lets drivers maintain the battery’s state of charge, by using the gas motor and it can be selected in conjunction with Normal, Econ and Sport driving modes.

“We think the combination of a class-leading 47 miles of all-electric driving range rating and a large, luxurious 5-passenger package will give us an advantage in the plug-in hybrid game,” said Ray Mikiciuk, assistant vice president of Honda Auto Sales at American Honda Motor Co. “The Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid represents the dawn of a new era, setting the path to a new generation of Honda products that will bring electrified technology into the mainstream.”

The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid’s electric driving range is shorter than both the Chevy Bolt and BMW i3 Range Extender, but neither of those models offer seating for five passengers. Honda expects the Clarity PHEV to be the volume seller between the three Clarity models: Clarity Electric, Clarity Fuel Cell and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid. Honda has not announced the pricing for the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, but it will go on sale nationwide by the end of the year.
