Ever since the Tesla Model S came on to the market in 2012, it’s been the poster child for electric cars – everyone wants one and almost every automaker wants to beat it. The Model S proved that electric cars can be livable, fun and luxurious. While the Model S is far out of reach for many car buyers with its $70k starting price, it is a strong alternative to the flagship sedans from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. With all the hype around the Model S and Tesla, is the Model S really that great? Here are the five things you need to know:

2Big and sexy


On the outside the Model S is a large sedan with a rear hatch, like the Audi A7. It’s styling is low, wide and sleek, which is again something that wasn’t part of the electric car equation before its arrival. It’s styling is slightly understated and reserved, like the BMW 7 Series. The Model S has received one small facelift since its introduction, but with new competition coming it might be time for a bigger refresh. From the rear, the Model S is starting to look a bit dated and could use an update.
