The next-generation 2016 Toyota Prius isn’t expected to arrive until the end of 2015. When the 2016 Prius arrives we can expect it to be more fuel efficient with updated styling, but some other details have started to surface, including a report that two battery options will be available.
The current Prius uses a nickel-metal-hydride battery, but according to a new interview with Toyota’s senior powertrain manager Koei Saga, the next Prius could offer two types of batteries on the standard Prius. The base model could continue to use the cheaper nickel-metal-hydride battery, while more expensive versions will use a more powerful lithium-ion battery pack.

All-wheel-drive is reportedly being discussed as well.

The standard Prius is slated to arrive by the end of 2015, but if you want the plug-in hybrid version, you will have to wait until sometime in 2016. Toyota is targeting a 10-percent fuel economy improvement for the next Prius, which would give it a 55 mpg rating, but it could be even higher.
