When Mazda unveiled the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 last month, Mazda failed to release any details about what will power the fourth-generation roadster. Now Mazda has confirmed that in the U.S. the 2016 MX-5 will be powered by a 2.0L Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine, while other markets will get a smaller 1.5L engine.
Mazda is still keeping the official performance specs under wraps, but the 2.0L engine is the same engine that powers the Mazda3, where it generates 155 horsepower. Mazda has stated that in the MX-5 the engine will have “ultra-high compression,” which hints that it could generate a bit more horsepower.

If Mazda can get the engine to generate closer to the 167 horsepower that the current 2.0L engine does, the next-generation MX-5 should be even more fun to drive, since it’s also 220 pounds lighter than the current model.
