A VW spokesman stated, “We look at everything. SUVs are very interesting. Our modular design allows more cutting. But is still no decision.” One of those models could be a new SUV based on the Up. Last year the Buggy Up concept that was based on the Up minicar was very popular on the auto show circuit.

Albrecht Reimold, head of VW Skovakia, which builds the Up, told Handelsblatt that the minicar’s lineup will be expanded with new variants but declined to discuss specific details about an SUV version. “It’s certainly an area we must look at,” he said.

“This is not a single car, but a whole family of models with many offshoots. This provides for a reasonable cost structure. We follow a circular concept, so that ensures success.”
