VW Has Killed Plans for a Golf Diesel-Hybrid

Volkswagen unveiled the Golf TDI Hybrid Concept at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year. At the show VW execs eluded to the fact that the concept would one day enter production…but it looks like those plans have changed.

The Golf TDI Hybrid was expected to average about 69 mpg (European cycle) and because of this environmentalists and fuel conscious individuals loved it. But even though the car had a strong following, plans have been scrapped. According to sources (Auto, Motor und Sport) VW could not justify the costs to produce the concept.

The Golf TDI Hybrid Concept was powered by a 3-cylinder diesel engine which was mated to a 27 horsepower electric motor and a 7-speed DSG transmission.

It looks like we will have to make due with a regular Golf Hybrid that will feature an electric motor mated to the 1.4L TFSI engine.
