VW Golf R Wagon in the Works?

We’re still about a year away from the arrival of the hot Golf R five-door hatchback in the U.S., but spy photographers have caught what looks like a wagon version of the Golf R testing in Germany.

We’re still about a year away from the arrival of the hot Golf R five-door hatchback in the U.S., but spy photographers have caught what looks like a wagon version of the Golf R testing in Germany. Could VW really be preparing a hotter version of the new Golf SportWagen?
Based on the new Golf Variant, which will simply be called the Golf SportWagen in the U.S. (no more Jetta SportWagen), the Golf R Variant would feature the same 296-hp 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder as the hatchback version. The 2.0L engine will send its power to all four wheels via either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission and the latest versions of VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

The Golf R’s body kit also carries over to the Golf SportWagen virtually unchanged, which means that the wagon would have a more aggressive front bumper, LED lighting, side skirts and quad exhaust pipes.

Given the fact that VW has expressed interest in expanding its R lineup, it could happen. But would it come to the U.S.? Probably not…
