A few months ago VW surprised the crowd when it unveiled VW Atlas Tanoak concept, a pickup that shared its DNA with the three-row Atlas SUV. At the time it was thought that the Atlas Tanoak concept was a preview of a new VW pickup for the United States, but VW is saying that it hasn’t made a decision about building it.
The VW Atlas Tanoak concept debuted at the 2018 New York Auto Show, which was basically VW’s answer to the Honda Ridgeline, since it shared its platform with the Atlas SUV rather than using a more rugged truck platform. Although it’s only been a few months since its debut, VW is still undecided about a production version since the Big 3 dominate the truck market.
Speaking to Autocar, Hinrich Woebcken, VW’s US boss, stated “It fits the brand well, because we want to get more American in the US, but it’s something we have to look at carefully. It’s a very patriotic segment, which American manufacturers dominate.”
