Volvo recently announced that it is working on a second electric car and that we’re going to find out more details about the new EV in March. On Thursday, Volvo announced that its second pure EV will enter production in 2021.
The announcement was part of a bigger a statement that Volvo will triple its EV production capacity at its plant in Ghent, Belgium. The second EV follows the XC40 Recharge.
“Our future is electric and customers clearly like what they see from our Recharge cars,” said Javier Varela, Head of Global Industrial Operations and Quality. “As we continue to electrify our line-up and boost our electric production capacity, Ghent is a real trailblazer for our global manufacturing network.”
The second EV will be based on the CMA modular vehicle architecture, which is also used by the XC40 Recharge.
Volvo still has a commitment that by 2025, it aims for its global sales to consist of 50 percent fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids.
