Volkswagen has yet to release the first model from its new electric car family, but a new report claims that VW is considering adding an off-road ready electric SUV to the lineup.

Auto Express is reporting that VW is looking at the idea of adding a rugged electric SUV to its lineup of I.D. badged vehicles, which would rival the Land Rover Defender and a growing number of electric SUVs.

VW’s head of strategy Michael Jost recently revealed that the brand is looking at an entering the off-road segment, which is dominated by the Jeep Wrangler and the next-generation Defender. VW would stand out from its rivals by offering a fully electric version.

“There are no producers in this sector yet, [building] a robust electric car that loves scratches and wears them as a badge of honor,” Jost stated.

As of right now VW hasn’t given the off-road electric SUV the green light, so a production date hasn’t been confirmed either. As of right now, the I.D. family will include the I.D. Neo hatchback, the I.D. Cross crossover, the I.D. Buzz minibus, the I.D. cargo van and the I.D. Vizzion sedan.
