We’re still just over a year away until Volkswagen begins production of the first electric car from its new family of electric vehicles. VW has already confirmed plans to build production versions of the I.D. hatchback, I.D. Crozz and even the microbus inspired I.D. Buzz. Now VW has confirmed that it will also put the I.D. Vizzion concept into production in 2022.

VW unveiled the electric I.D. Vizzion sedan concept earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show as a possible preview of a future VW electric sedan. Auto Express is now reporting that VW has given the I.D. Vizzion the green light and it will positioned against other big sedans, like the Tesla Model S and even the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. VW hopes that the new electric sedan will be a more successful luxury sedan than the Phaeton ever was.

Jurgen Stackmann, VW’s sales and marketing boss revealed that the I.D. Vizzion is not too far away, “We want to put I.D. Vizzion into a reality, but not with Level 5 autonomous driving, and the timing is planned for around 2022. We did not even think for a second about what [powertrain] system we should put into the flagship model; it’s a flagship for the next generation.”

The VW electric sedan will ride on its MEB platform and borrow styling cues from the I.D. Vizzion concept. It will also feature up to two electric motors, one on each axle to give it all-wheel drive. The sedan will also have a driving range around 330 miles.
