Toyota is looking at the future of fuel cell technology with the debut of the Toyota Fine-Comfort Ride concept that is debuting this month at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The Toyota Fine-Comfort Ride concept is powered by a fuel cell system that powers in-wheel electric motors. Since the motors are placed in the wheels and not under the hood, like in a traditional car, the designers were given more flexibility with the design of the concept.

For example the wheels are pushed to the corners of the concept and the cabin section of the body has a diamond shape and is wider in all dimensions from the front to center, before narrowing towards the rear. This fives more room for the second row seats and also improves the concept’s aerodynamic performance.

Toyota says that the Toyota Fine-Comfort Ride concept is more than just a “ride,” since it offers more, like an Agent function and a touch display arranged around the driver and the passenger seats. The seats have flexible adjustments and the displays can be accessed by everyone in the car to give them access to more information.

The Toyota Fine-Comfort Ride concept has a driving range up to 600 miles on the Japan test cycle.
