Solid-state batteries are going to bring great improvements to electrified vehicles, since they provide a longer range and quicker charging than the current batteries. Several automakers are working on the breakthrough technology and now Toyota has confirmed that it is also working on solid-state batteries.

Toyota’s chief scientist and head of the Toyota Research Institute, Gill Pratt spoke with Autoline at CES 2022, where he confirmed that the first Toyota with a solid-state battery will still have an internal combustion engine. This means that the Toyota’s first solid-state battery will be in a hybrid, instead of a fully electric vehicle.

He also stated that the vehicle will arrive in the first half of the decade. Since Toyota has decided to launch the solid-state tech first in a hybrid, it will be able to test it first before the technology is added to a battery powered EV.
