Almost every automaker is looking at ways to downsize its engines and now Subaru is reportedly looking at a plan that would see the end of its 3.6L six-cylinder engine.
The Legacy and Outback models are available with a 3.6L six-cylinder boxer engine, but according to one Subaru exec both models could soon only be available with a choice of four-cylinder engines.

“In terms of the body size, a 2.0-liter with a turbocharger is enough, I think,” Subaru’s engineering general manager, Yoichi Hori, revealed to CarAdvice.

Subaru’s 2.0L four-cylinder that’s available in the Forester and WRX can already compete with the larger six-cylinder, since its power figures are similar.

“Our research said the six-cylinder model is decreasing in the world,” Hori stated. “So that’s why probably the future, many companies take the smaller displacement with a turbocharger, or diesel, or hybrid.”
