The next-generation Subaru WRX is expected to arrive in 2020 and Subaru’s design chief Mamoru Ishii recently confirmed to Autocar that the Viziv Performance concept will heavily influence the next WRX. The reaction to the Viziv Performance concept was so positive that Ishii believes that most of the concept’s design will be left intake for the next WRX.

“Such a car brings lots of expectation, from within the company and from our customers,” Ishii stated. “What we know is that our customers’ lifestyles are changing and we have to respond to that. The question was whether we have done that in a correct way with this concept.”

We have built up this tradition with the Legacy, Impreza and WRX,” he said. “We want it to look fast even when it is parked.”

Ishii also hinted that the next WRX will get some changes under the hood, which will likely be a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. “Four-wheel drive is critical to the power and performance levels our customers expect, but on the engine we have more freedom.”
