When Toyota announced that Scion would disappear this summer, it confirmed that the iA, iM and FR-S would live on as Toyota models in the U.S. Now Toyota has confirmed that the FR-S will be badged as the 2017 Toyota 86 here in the U.S.
When we announced the transition of the Scion models to Toyota we hadn’t planned on changing the names of our cars, but by popular demand, for our sports car, we decided to adopt the global name of 86,” said Toyota Division Group Vice President, Bill Fay. “Enthusiasts have a strong association with the front-engine, rear-drive heritage of the ‘hachi-roku’ and the dynamic performance it offers.”

The 2017 86 is also going to get some performance and suspension upgrades, plus updated styling. From the front, the 86 gets a larger center intake and new LED headlights and a restyled bumper. The rear also gets new taillights and a redesigned bumper. Inside the instrument panel is covered in a new “Grandlux” material and an updated steering wheel.
Under the hood, the 2.0L engine gets a slight power boost to 205-hp and 156 lb-ft. of torque with the manual transmission.
Toyota has also confirmed the names for the iM and iA models, which will now be called the Corolla iM and Toyota Yaris iA. Also the C-HR small crossover will be added to the lineup in spring 2017 as a 2018 model.
