This was too funny to not share. When I’m not testing one of the latest new cars, my Porsche 718 Boxster gets me around town. Well Porsche just sent me a recall notice for my 2017 718 Boxster. Initially when I saw the envelope I assumed it must be a recall for the typical recall, like the emissions system or some other electronic system that needs updating, well I was wrong.

Porsche has issued a safety recall for the 2017-2019 Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman to retrofit the side air intakes. Why? Well apparently some Porsche 718 drivers and their passengers are smoking in their beloved Porsches and instead of putting the cigarette out in the ashtray, they are instead throwing the cigarette butts out the window. Normally this would just mean extra butts on the side of the road, but in the case of the 718 Boxster and Cayman, these dirty cigarette butts are getting sucked up by the side air intakes.

Once the cigarette butts enter the side air intakes, there are chances that a fire could break out in the engine compartment. I can’t even imagine…

Even though Porsche is saying, “To minimize the change of this ever happening to you, we are writing to remind you NEVER to throw burning cigarettes or cigars out of your vehicle,” there’s still going to be plenty of people that won’t listen to the warning. To prevent a fire in the engine compartment, the recall will involve Porsche installing a protective mesh grille in the side air intakes.

So there you have it. If you are a smoker and happen to be driving a 718 Boxster or Cayman, never throw that cigarette butt out the window or you might end up burning your Porsche to the ground.
