It’s been reported for a while that Porsche is working on a BMW 5 Series rival, but now a new report claims that the new model will also be offered with electric and hydrogen fuel cell versions. A series of new patent applications filed in Germany, the U.S. and China have revealed some of the details for the new vehicle, which will be based on the Panamera Sport Turismo concept.
The electric version will go head-to-head with the Tesla Model S with a driving range around 265 miles and at least 420 horsepower on tap. Patents filed last December reveal that Porsche is developing a new structural rear-mounting system for the electric drive motors. The electric powertrain itself will be part of the ‘eMSB’ structure, which will help stiffen the rear end.

The electric version is expected to arrive in late 2017 or early 2018, while the fuel cell version will arrive shortly after.
