The sedan could soon become extinct thanks to the ever growing popularity of the crossover and SUV, but that doesn’t mean that some automakers are ready to give up on them. Nissan revealed an all-new 2019 Nissan Altima this week, which it hopes will add some excitement to the midsize sedan segment and now Nissan has confirmed that the next-generation Nissan Sentra is coming next year.

2018 Nissan Sentra

Nissan’s North America vice president of product planning revealed to the Roadshow at the New York Auto Show that it is already working on the next Sentra. Without giving too many details about the new 2020 Sentra, Michael Bunce stated that it is “probably the vehicle where we have the most opportunity.” The Sentra is definitely overshadowed in the segment by models, like the Civic and Mazda3. Bunce even admitted, “We have a lot of ground to make up there.”

The current Nissan Sentra fails to stand out in the segment with its uninspiring styling and its even more uninspiring 1.8L four-cylinder that only generates 124 horsepower and 125 lb-ft. of torque.

Bunce also confirmed that Nissan is working on the next Nissan Maxima as well, where he hinted that it will deliver “something greater than people ever thought or imagined a Maxima could be.”
