A few months ago it was reported that Volkswagen may not make a new Scirocco after the current model’s lifespan. Now we have a new report that claims that the VW Scirocco will see a new generation, but with some big changes – an electric powertrain.

AutoExpress is reporting that the new Scirocco won’t arrive until after 2020, but when it does arrive it will be based on VW’s new MEB electric powertrain, which is also being used for the new Microbus. In the Scirocco we could see a driving range well over 300 miles and a horsepower rating around 175 horsepower.

For me, we can only use [the Scirocco name] for a sporty two-door coupe,” VW’s head of R&D, Dr. Frank Welsch, revealed to AutoExpress. “We are not clear on how we will do such a car, and are thinking whether we do an interesting concept based on our electric platform; this could be a great and fun car.”

VW probably won’t make a decision anytime soon, since right now the focus is on getting the production versions of the I.D. Hatchback, I.D. Buzz and I.D. Crozz concepts ready.
