It’s being reported that VW will likely reveal the next-generation VW Jetta GLI in January at the Detroit Auto Show. The new Jetta GLI will keep the same formula as it has in the past, by borrowing its turbocharged engine and other performance parts from the much loved GTI.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta R-Line

José Carlos Pavone, Volkswagen Brazil’s head of design, recently spoke to Autoblog.com.ar at the launch of the new Jetta, which is sold as the Vento in South America. When asked about the Jetta GLI, Pavone stated, “I estimate that Vento GLI could be presented in January, during the Detroit Show. The sports version was specifically designed for the tastes of the North American market.”

Pavone also revealed that the new Jetta GLI will have some red lines like the GTI, unique five-spoke wheels and a black roof.

The new Jetta GLI will borrow its 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder from the GTI. It’s not known yet if the four-cylinder will generate the same power under the hood of the Jetta GLI as it does in the GTI. The four-cylinder in the 2019 GTI has also received an upgrade with an extra horsepower, for a total 228-hp.

With that much power, the next-generation Jetta GLI will have enough power to compete with other compact sporty sedans, like the Honda Civic Si and Hyundai Elantra Sport.
