This year Volkswagen has been focusing on previewing its upcoming electric models, like the I.D. Crozz and I.D. Buzz, but that doesn’t mean that VW isn’t also working on new versions of its existing lineup. Volkswagen has confirmed that the next-generation VW Golf will arrive in 2020, just a few weeks ahead of the introduction of the electric I.D. hatchback.
Jürgen Stackman, VW’s board member and head of sales and marketing, revealed to Drive that the eight-generation Golf will essentially arrive at the same time as the first model from VW’s new family of electric vehicles.
“There is going to be an extremely strong new Golf 8 coming, it will launch just a month ahead of the I.D. We believe that they both stand on their own feet, in their own rights.” Stackmann said, revealed.
The next Golf and I.D. hatchback will essentially be the same size and VW is targeting a price that is close to the Golf diesel. The arrival of the I.D. hatchback also signals the end of the line for the electric e-Golf, since the only electrified Golf moving forward will be a plug-in hybrid version.
“If you look at the launch dates they are just a month apart in future, but this is not really our worry because we know how to do cars. I think the true stress-test is our capability to bring together connectivity, autonomous drive, and electric at the same time.”
