There has been a lot of speculation lately about what Jaguar has planned for the next-generation Jaguar F-Type. Earlier reports have claimed that the next F-Type could switch to a mid-engine layout that would make it a closer rival to the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman. Now a new report speculates that the next F-Type will keep its engine in front, but with another big change.

According to Car Magazine, the 2020 Jaguar F-Type will ditch its current supercharged 5.0L V8 and instead will be powered by BMW’s 4.4L V8 that also powers the new 8 Series. If the report is accurate that means that the F-Type would be the second sports car to tap BMW, since the upcoming Toyota Supra also uses BMW’s engines.

Car Magazine also speculates that the 2020 F-Type will grow a bit in size, which means that it could get a 2+2 layout instead of the current two seater layout. With room for two more passengers, the 2020 F-Type could be positioned as a Porsche 911 rival. Even with the bigger footprint, the next F-Type is expected to use more aluminum to help it come in lighter than the current model.

Previous reports have also claimed that the next F-Type could be renamed the J-Type. But the J-Type name might be used for a second sports car that will adopt a mid-engined layout. We’ll have to wait and see if any of these reports about the next-generation Jaguar F-Type are accurate, since Jaguar unfortunately hasn’t released any info.
