Volvo and Nvidia have announced plans to integrate Nvidia’s Drive AGX Xavier technology into Volvo’s next-generation SPA 2 platform. The AI-capable core computer will debut with the arrival of the next-generation 90 and 60 Series models.
This latest agreement builds upon the existing partnership between Volvo and Nvidia. Last year the two companies teamed up to jointly develop technology for self-driving cars. The new computing platform that will debut in a few years when the SPA 2 platform debuts. The SPA 2 platform will be used by the next-generation XC90, which is slated to arrive in 2021 and the 60 and 90 series cars.
The next-generation Volvo XC90 is going to arrive with Level 4 autonomous driving capability, which will use Nvidia’s technology. “A successful launch of autonomous drive will require an enormous amount of computing power as well as constant advances in artificial intelligence,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars.
