BMW is reportedly working on a new turbocharged 3.0L six-cylinder engine that will power the next-generation BMW M3 and M4 models. The engine known internally as the S58 could have around 475 horsepower, which is a nice increase from the current 425-hp S55 engine.

The big news is that the engine will debut under the hood of the X3 M and X4 M models, before it debuts with the next M3 and M4. The new X3 M marks the first time that the X3 will be offered in a hotter M version. The X3 M will rival several performance crossovers, like the Audi SQ5 and Mercedes-AMG GLC63.

There’s also a rumor that the next M3, codenamed G80 may get a mild-hybrid powertrain with a 48-volt electric system. The G80 BMW M3 will also drop a few pounds thanks to BMW’s CLAR platform and the extensive use of carbon fiber.
