It’s no secret that the second generation Audi R8 has failed to spark the same level of interest that the first generation did, which is why up until now it was understood that Audi had killed plans for a successor. Now a new report claims that Audi is working on a third-generation R8, which will ditch its internal combustion engines for a fully electric powertrain.

Audi has big ambitions for its future electric lineup and the R8 may be positioned as the perfect flagship. According to Autocar, the third-generation Audi R8 will arrive in 2022 as a an electric car. It’s expected that the third-generation R8 will take some inspiration from the PB18 e-tron concept that recently debuted at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Sources have hinted about an electric R8, but Audi has yet to confirm it. If the R8 does in fact take its inspiration from the PB18 e-tron concept, Autocar speculates that it could have close to 1,000 horsepower and a 0-62 mph time of only 2.0 seconds. The third-generation R8 will also likely be called the R8 e-tron.

Either way we’ll have to wait a bit until Audi even confirms that a new R8 is in the works. In the mean time Audi is going to reveal the e-tron SUV this month, which will be followed by the sportier e-tron Sportback.
