Toyota and Subaru are currently working on the next-generation of the 86 and BRZ coupes and now we’ve received some news about what we can expect when they debut in 2021. The biggest news is that the current 2.0L boxer engine will be replaced by a 2.4L engine, that’s likely related to the engine in the 2019 Ascent SUV.

According to The Japan Times, the next Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ will switch to the larger engine, but it’s not mentioned if the engine will be turbocharged, like it is in the Ascent. In the Ascent the turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder engine generates 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet. The center of gravity will also be lower for the new coupes, which will make them even more fun to drive.

Both coupes will be built at Subaru’s Gunma factory. The next Subaru BRZ will also likely get Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance system.
