Last year VW unveiled the new Golf Cabriolet at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, now this year, VW is debuting a new sportier version, the first ever GTI Cabriolet. The GTI Cabriolet is powered by the GTI’s 2.0L TSI engine with 207 horsepower and 207 lb-ft. of torque, which makes it the most powerful Golf Cabriolet ever.
The GTI Cabriolet borrows many of the GTI’s trademarks like its red-framed honeycomb grille and GTI badge. The front bumper that also has a large honeycomb air intake and the vertically positioned fog lights, as well as a new rear diffuser featuring chrome tailpipes. Similar to the GTI Coupe, the Golf GTI Cabriolet features smoked LED rear lights and side sill extensions. The GTI Cabriolet rides on standard 17-inch “Denver” style alloy wheels, with the 18-inch “Detroit” style alloy wheels being optional.
According to VW the Golf GTI Cabriolet will reach 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds and buyers can choose between the six-speed manual or dual-clutch transmission. The fabric top can be operated at speeds up to 19 mph an takes 9.5 seconds to open and 11 seconds to close.
The biggest changes to the interior are a more raked windshield and a unique rear bench seat.
VW states that the Golf GTI Cabriolet will go on sale this summer, but it’s unlikely that it will be offered in the U.S., since we also don’t get the Golf Cabriolet.
