It seems like every week there is a new story about the current gas issue. Well now comes word that a legislator in California, US is proposing that the state should tax gas guzzling vehicles. The higher taxes on the gas-guzzling vehicles would then go to those people that buy fuel-efficient vehicles like the Toyota Prius.
This topic of how the U.S. should reduce its dependence on foreign oil and reduce the amount of pollution caused by cars has been highly controversial. The state of California is already one of the few states in the U.S. that has higher pollution standards. If this legislation were to pass buyers of large SUVs and trucks would have to pay an additional $100-$2500. This money would then be given to buyers of fuel-efficient cars such as the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic and the Ford Focus.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, starting in 2011 the state would rank vehicles based on the amount of carbon dioxide and other harmful pollutants that they emit.
The proposal has already passed one committee and has gained support, although car dealers see it as a measure that unfairly targets large families and farmers.
