Last year Mercedes-Benz announced that it would not sell any 2017 diesel models in the United States and that decision is now carrying over for the 2018 model year. Even though there has been a small resurgence of diesel powered models, Mercedes-Benz still doesn’t think that there’s enough demand in the U.S.

Ola Kallenius, Mercedes’ head of R&D revealed to The Detroit Bureau at this year’s Detroit Auto Show that even though its new diesel engines would pass emissions tests in the United States, the automaker doesn’t have any plans to sell them here.

“The diesel doesn’t fit into our portfolio in the U.S.,” Kallenius stated.

Although the decision to not sell diesels in the U.S. anymore may sadden diesel fans, the truth is that only about 3 percent of Mercedes’ sales came from diesels.
