With the new Mercedes-Benz GLA crossover now rolling into showrooms it remains to be seen how many buyers gravitate towards the new compact crossover. Mercedes-Benz is now previewing another crossover that could be even smaller than the GLA with the new G-Code concept.
The automaker has opened a new R&D center in Beijing, China and as part of the opening Mercedes-Benz has revealed the G-Code concept that has been designed for the Chinese market. In addition to previewing a smaller crossover, the G-Code concept also showcases some future technologies that we can expect from Mercedes-Benz.
Under the hood the G-Code is powered by a turbocharged engine that runs on hydrogen and sends its power to the front wheels, while an electric motor powers the rear wheels. The electric motor’s battery can be recharged using a conventional wall outlet, but the G-Code concept also has a new “multi-voltaic” paint that acts like a large solar panel to harness electricity from sunlight. The unique paint also regenerates electrostatic energy as wind is drawn over the surface.
The G-Code concept is expected to debut later this month at the LA Auto Show.
