McLaren 12C fans have just received a bit of bad news as McLaren has decided to kill the 12C as it focuses on the new 650S Coupe and Spider. It’s not all that surprising since the 650S is essentially a facelifted version of the 12C.
The news was confirmed by McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt in a letter that was sent to existing 12C owners:

“The final piece of news I wanted to share with you is regarding 12C production which we have decided to cease in light of the success of 650S. The new car has been so well received since its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show (we already have a six month order bank) we will focus all our capacity at the McLaren Production Centre on 650S. After three years of 12C production, this represents a natural evolution of our model line-up.”

McLaren did give 12C owners some good news though, since exisiting 12C owners will be given a free Technology Upgrade that includes some of the updates that debuted on the 650S. Some of the upgrades include a new Active Aero software that deploys the rear wing as an airbrake during hard braking and as a Drag Reduction System during higher speeds. The upgrades also include updates to the infotainment system, a back-up camera and Sirius satellite radio.
