The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced that the 2018 Mazda6 has received its Top Safety Pick award, but it missed out on the higher Top Safety Pick+ award due to its headlights.

2018 Mazda6 mpg rating

When equipped with the optional curve-adaptive headlights, the 2018 Mazda6 earns the Top Safety Pick award. To receive the Top Safety Pick award a vehicle must have good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, plus the available front crash prevention has to receive an advanced or superior rating and the headlights have to be rated as acceptable or good. The higher Top Safety Pick+ rating is reserved for vehicles that receive a good headlight rating.

The 2018 Mazda6 received a good rating in all the IIHS crashworthiness tests, including the new passenger-side small overlap test.

For crash prevention, the 2018 Mazda6 with the optional Smart Brake Support and standard Smart City Brake Support system received a superior rating.

It”s worth noting that only the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trim levels received the Top Safety Pick rating, since both those trim levels come with the curve-adaptive LED headlights. The other trim levels are equipped with headlights that only received a marginal rating.
