It’s being reported that Mazda is currently working on a new Mazda-2 based crossover that is expected to be released sometime this year in Japan, which will coincide with the introduction of the next Mazda2. The new Mazda2-based crossover will be smaller than the current CX-5 and sales are expected to launch in Japan first before it expands to Europe and emerging markets.
It isn’t known if the new crossover will be sold in the U.S. as well, but growing competition in the segment could help its case. Honda has already starting selling its small Vezel crossover Japan, which borrows its platform from the new Honda Fit. The small Honda crossover is expected to eventually be offered in the U.S. as well.
Mazda is also expected to introduce a new CX-9 crossover next year.
