Mazda doesn’t currently offer any of its models with an electrified powertrain, but that’s about to change. It’s being reported that Mazda is going to reveal its first electric car next month at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Automotive News received the confirmation from a spokesman. We still don’t know what it will be called yet, but Mazda’s first EV will also reportedly be offered in two versions, a pure electric car and one with a range-extending combustion engine. The new EV will not be based on any of Mazda’s current models and we also don’t know if it will be a hatchback, sedan or a crossover, although it will most likely be a crossover.

What will power the range-extending model? Well it’s being reported that the rotary engine will make a return under the hood of the new EV. Stay tuned…
