Recently it was reported that Lexus has canceled plans for a new Lexus GS and now we’ve learned what may replace it – the next-generation 2019 Lexus ES. The news is bad news for rear-wheel drive fans, since even though both sedans are about the same size, the ES is a front-wheel drive sedan vs. the GS, which sends its power to the rear wheels.

According to Auto Review, the next-generation ES will be based on Toyota’s TNGA platform, which is also the basis for the next-generation Camry. Why is Lexus choosing the ES over the GS? Well for one, the ES outsells the GS by a landslide 58k to 15k units. Plus the TNGA platform is shared with pretty much every new Toyota in the pipeline, so it will be much cheaper to build the next-generation ES vs a new GS.

Lexus has yet to confirm any of the reports, but if they are true, the next-generation ES will arrive in about a year.
