Lexus and Toyota have been reluctant to release an electric car, but it looks like that’s about to change. Lexus has confirmed that it’s working on an electric car for China and Europe, but it’s not known exactly what it will be.

“Definitely here we need an EV in the future,” Lexus International President Yoshihiro Sawa recently told Automotive News. “But I cannot say when or how.”

China and Europe have stricter EV requirements than the US, which is forcing automakers to introduce more electrified vehicles. Lexus hasn’t announced when it will introduce its new EV. Although Lexus hasn’t confirmed what it’s new electric vehicle will be, it did recently trademark the “UX 300e” name in Europe, which hints at an all-electric version of the its new UX crossover.

In the meantime Lexus is also working on plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles as well.

Toyota on the other hand, is getting ready to release an all-electric version of the C-HR crossover in China.
