Two years ago rumors started to circulate that Subaru was working on a mid-engined sports car, but then they were quickly put to rest when a Subaru exec killed the rumors. Now it’s being rumored again, since Japan’s Best Car claims that a Subaru sports car is coming.

While we’ll have to wait and see if there is any truth behind the rumors, latest report claims that the mid-engined Subaru sports car will be powered by a turbocharged boxer engine that’s mated to an electric motor. The original report back in 2016 also claimed that a similar powertrain was in the works with a conventional mid-mounted boxer engine powering the rear wheels. The original rumor also claimed that two electric motors would power the front wheels to give the sports car all-wheel drive.

The latest report also claims that the upcoming Subaru sports car will actually be a plug-in hybrid model. While we’ll have to wait until Subaru confirms it, it looks like mid-engined sports cars might be the next trend. The Chevy Corvette C8 is going to be powered by a mid-mounted engine and even Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar are reportedly toying with the idea for their future sports cars.
