Today Hyundai took the wraps off the 2022 Kona N, its first SUV for the high performance N sub-brand. While most buyers will love the available 286 horsepower that the Kona N brings to the table, it’s powertrain isn’t exactly green. Well luckily Hyundai is working on that, since it also announced that it’s looking to expand its N brand with electric and fuel cell powertrains.

“Hyundai Motor looks to build upon its success with N brand in e-performance possibly with electric and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains.”

Hyundai wants its N models, like the Kona N to offer “sustainable driving fun.” The brand already has the components it needs to achieve this with its new dedicated battery electric vehicle platform, E-GMP and a new fuel cell powertrain. The new Ioniq 5 is based on the E-GMP platform.

The electric Kona N will likely build on the current Kona Electric.
