Hyundai is reportedly working on a high-performance version of the new Kona SUV, which could help set it apart in the crowded compact segment. The Kona N, has yet to get the official green light, but it’s reportedly powered by the same 247-hp 2.0L turbocharged engine as the i30 N.

2018 Hyundai Kona

Albert Biermann, Hyundai’s N performance boss recently told Auto Express that he has Hyundai’s engineers testing a Kona N that could arrive by the end of the decade. “I’ve told them to build the car and we’ll see what happens with it getting approved. It has to be the i30 N powertrain, really. Of course, we can give Kona different specifications on suspension and steering, although there are some common components we can use in that area as well, because it’ll be front-wheel drive, like the i30 N. But we already know that it has to be that car’s engine and gearbox for the Kona N, yes.”

It’s doubtful that the Kona N would get the i30 N’s Performance Package that ups the horsepower rating 271 horsepower. Even with 247 horsepower on tap, the Kona N will have a significant performance advantage over the standard Kona with its 175-hp or 147-hp engines.
