With the growing number of convertible crossovers, some of the most popular crossovers could soon offer drop top versions. Well Honda is playing a fun April Fool’s Day joke on us with the release of the Honda CR-V Roadster concept.
While the Range Rover Evoque convertible features a somewhat complicated folding roof, Honda took a much easier route by just chopping off the CR-V’s metal roof, including its B and C pillars. In the real world this wouldn’t be the most ideal option, since it would significantly reduce structural rigidity of the SUV and even Honda admits that its attempt basically makes the CR-V Roadster undriveable.
“This is a bold new direction for the CR-V and opens up an entirely new non-existent market. Our sales target is somewhat conservative to start with, at zero cars, but we are confident that once the minor glitches are ironed out, such as the lack of roof and the fact it is totally structurally unsound, the car will fly out of showrooms.”
Since half the car has been chopped off, Honda imagines that the CR-V Roadster will sell for about half the price of the standard CR-V.
