Sales of sedans have continued to drop off in the United States, which means that several of GM’s models could have a questionable future. Because of the declining sales, GM is now reportedly looking at discontinuing at least six of its models in the U.S. after 2020.

The LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Cadillac XTS, Impala, Volt and Chevrolet Sonic could all be discontinued.

GM and the United Auto Workers union are currently having talks about the future of GM’s plants and jobs in the United States as car sales continue to decline. Especially about the production at plants like Hamtramck in Michigan and Lordstown in Ohio. The plants currently produce the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Volt and Chevrolet Sonic. The future of all six models is now in question.

GM has already cut shifts as its inventory of unsold cars has continued to increase, but the declining demand for sedans could mean that the plants that produce them could permanently close. The spotlight is on GM’s Hamtramck plant in Detroit, since it currently produces four slow-selling models: Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Cadillac CT6 and Chevrolet Volt.

In the first half of 2017, the Hamtramck plant built 35,000 fewer cars than it did during the same period in 2016. The UAW is aware of the issue and is currently talking to GM about what other models it could build at the Hamtramck and Lordstown plants.

“We are tracking it (and) we are addressing it,” UAW president Dennis Williams recently told reporters.

While there’s a chance that sedans, like the LaCrosse, Impala and Cadillac XTs could disappear, the Chevrolet Volt could eventually be replaced by a hybrid crossover. Sales of hybrid’s like the Prius and Hyundai Ioniq aren’t really making headlines anymore, but the Kia Niro and hybrid versions of the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue are.
